Is availability of land a real constraint to fodder development in Bhutan
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Because of historical, geographical and demographic conditions Bhutan has a comparative advantage for livestock production. In spite of this favourable conditions the high expectations from development interventions of the seventies and eighties could only be partly realized. After thirty years of intensive breeding programmes, with high inputs of financial and human resources, Bhutan, the land of herders, and mixed farmers, has become a net importer of livestock products, including liquid milk. The progress in livestock development was hampered by insufficient fodder quality and quantity. Although these nutritional limitations are sometimes not recognized many of the frequently mentioned constraints to livestock production, such as infertility, low productivity, plant poisoning, cattle migration etc can be directly or indirectly related to nutrition and especially to fodder availability and quality.

Fodder Crop Production for Conservation as Winter Feed and Technology Transfer from Pakistan to N.w. China and North Vietnam
Livestock production by transhumance rearing systems is the major land use and a source of livelihood in most areas of the arid, semiarid, and arid temperate agro-ecological zones of Asia. It is perhaps the best way of exploiting these pastures economically. Lack of feed is the major constraint to improving livestock production during winter and early spring, as the temperatures are extremely l...

متن کاملChange in the Land Use System in Bhutan: Ecology, History, Culture, and Power
In this two part analysis I attempt to answer questions with reference to historical land use and tenurial systems in Bhutan. The first part throws light on the popularly held view that land tenure in Bhutan was feudal prior to the advent of moderisation. By looking at the lived experiences of peasants in Bhutan, as human agents at the nexus of social, political, economic, and ecological forces...
متن کاملStudy of Scheduling Problems with Machine Availability Constraint
In real world scheduling applications, machines might not be available during certain time periods due to deterministic or stochastic causes. In this article, the machine scheduling with availability constraints for both deterministic and stochastic cases with different environments, constraints and performance measures will be discussed. The existing body of research work in the literature wil...
متن کاملA Participatory and Multi-Scale Diagnosis for Developing a Soil Conservation Strategy for Eastern Bhutan
Land degradation by soil erosion and landslides has been recognised as a constraint for sustainable land-use in Eastern Bhutan for a few decades. However, the extreme diversity in agro-ecological zones, the relative inaccessibility of the region, the lack of reliable data and the limited research capacity made it very difficult to develop a relevant land management strategy. To address this iss...
